Measuring 820 km's north to south and 120 km's east to west, the Maldives Republic has over 1,192 islands.
The closest neighbours are India and Sri Lanka. People who have never been to the Maldives have often a hard time understanding that there is almost NO land; Maldives is mainly composed of sea with little pockets of coral dotted on top of an old volcanic mountain range. Only 202 of the islands are inhabited, there are no hills or rivers and the highest point above sea level is less than 10 feet high.
With its white beaches, turquoise lagoons and clear warm water, Maldives offers the rare vision of a tropical paradise.
Maldives local population is Muslim and they practice their religious traditions. The western influence is visible due to the increasing number of tourists and for consequence the number of surfers in the capital Male. The main population is quite conservative but friendly and welcoming so when you get to know them you will meet some really nice and genuine people.
